Alice Book Exploration

This visual retelling of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland challenges the traditional storytelling experience. It is extremely playful, whimsical and tactile, staying true to feel of the original content. The reader directly relates to main character’s recollection of the story through the simulation of the wonder and confusion she encounters.

On the cover, hand-drawn typography is lightly debossed on suede, adding softness and sensory detail. Four booklets of content, tucked inside, can be unfolded and pieced together to reveal a large poster. The reader can flip through the book or open it vertically, transforming it into a Jacob’s ladder which mimics Alice’s endless fall down the rabbit-hole.

Let’s Explore

Custom, hand-drawn typography is lightly debossed onto suede on both front and back covers to add to the tactile experience. All the components of the hybrid book, on display. The main poster is shown here at one quarter scale.

Flip through the case and read the quote that inspired the project: “‘and what is the use of a book,’ thought Alice, ‘without pictures or conversation?’”.

Or, open the case vertically, and it transforms into a Jacob’s Ladder. The cascading blocks mimic Alice’s endless tumble down the rabbit-hole.

The first booklet follows a traditional look and feel, but read on and you’ll find that each booklet experience becomes increasingly fragmented; A vague recollection of a dream. The booklets feature memorable quotes, from memorable characters. The Cheshire Cat can be found throughout the ‘book’. Here, he appears in a hidden spread of a booklet with his quote, “You may have noticed, I’m not all there myself.” As you turn the top section of the spread, he vanishes.
